Gold was discovered in the Welkom area in the 1940’s.
As is true the world over, the discovery of gold led
to a tremendous increase in population. As the gold
companies moved in and began to develop the area they
brought in workers from all over the African continent.
These workers were largely kept in barrack-style housing,
and were not allowed to bring their families with them;
instead, prostitutes were provided to the men. This was
one of the biggest causes of the HIV / AIDS pandemic in
Africa. As these men contracted the virus, they would also
go back to their homes and infect their families.
Within the last several years the production of the gold
mines drastically decreased, causing widespread unemployment.
This in turn led to an increase in poverty. Other results are
an increase in the crime rate, poor education, less opportunities
for growth, and a multitude of other related issues.

Restoring Hope International was founded in 2008. The purpose of
this organization is to support the missionaries who have been
called to serve in South Africa, and to support the churches who
send them. Our family commenced ministry in South Africa under
Ambassadors International Ministries, Inc., the organization who
initiated the work of The Pines Christian Care Centre for Children.
After serving at The Pines for over a year, God led us to join the
work of Restoring Hope International. It is our goal to continue
work with orphaned and vulnerable children who have been impacted
by the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and to ultimately see those children
equipped and willing to impact their continent with the message
of God’s love.
